Systems Leadership Program Moves into Applied Learning Phase

The inaugural WSYD Moving Systems Leadership Program has reached an exciting stage, with participants completing the first part of their nine-month leadership journey.

Over the past five months, 21 leaders from across health, local government, sport, recreation, education, academia and the community sector have come together to explore how systems leadership can help address one of Western Sydney's biggest challenges—making it easier for everyone to be active.

The fifth and final full day session was final Hosted at Western Sydney University's Liverpool Campus, the program has combined practical learning with rich discussion, encouraging participants to challenge traditional ways of working and embrace collaboration, place-based action and health equity as foundations for long-term change.

The final session featured reflections from program sponsor Martin Sheppard, Smart Connection Consulting who shared his leadership journey and the importance of building meaningful partnerships across sectors. Associate Professor Emma George then guided participants through the critical role that evaluation plays in understanding impact, supporting continuous learning and strengthening system change.

The program now enters its next phase, with participants developing Applied Learning Projects that put systems leadership into practice within their own organisations and communities. These projects are designed to create practical solutions to local challenges while contributing to healthier, more connected communities across Western Sydney.

A selection of Applied Learning Projects will be showcased at the WSYD Moving Symposium on 22 October at Bankstown Sports Club.

WSYD Moving extends its sincere thanks to the inaugural cohort for their enthusiasm, generosity and willingness to learn together. The Systems Leadership Program is a key recommendation of the Tackling Inactivity and Inequity in Western Sydney: A Systems Approach White Paper and represents an important investment in building the leadership capability needed to create healthier, more active communities across the region.

Expressions of Interest are now open for the 2027 WSYD Moving Systems Leadership Program. The nine-month program brings together emerging and established leaders from across sectors to develop the skills, relationships and confidence to lead systems change.
