More Than a Tennis Event: The Impact of Armoura Day
Article contributed by Geoff Asilo, Founder of Armoura
When we started Armoura, the goal was simple: create a space where people could play sport, improve and feel like they belonged. One year later, we celebrated with Armoura Day.
What started as a tennis event became a community day, bringing together 350+ people, athletes, families, friends, local businesses and partners through tennis tournaments and activations, pickleball scrimmage, cultural foods, Hip-hop & RnB music & Dj, and local clothing vendors.
But the numbers only tell part of the story.
Starting Armoura at the age of 21
I started Armoura when I was 21, with a big passion for tennis, sport and creating opportunities for people around me.
I didn't have everything figured out.
What I did have was a passionate team who believed in the same vision and were willing to build alongside me.
Together, we've grown Armoura from an idea into a community where people can come together through sport.
That journey has taught me that building something meaningful isn't just about having the right business plan. It's about having people around you who believe in the mission and are willing to contribute.
The REAL impact was connection
On the day, we saw things that don't always show up in an event report.
Parents connect through passion and care.
Young athletes bonding with each other and the coaches.
Local businesses creating memorable experiences beyond their service.
Newcomers picking up a racquet for the first time and giving it a go
People arriving with their own friendship groups and leaving having met someone new!
That, to me, is the real value of grassroots sport, genuine human connection through MOVEMENT.
Sport becomes the reason people come together. Community and genuine connections is what makes them stay.
Why this matters for Western Sydney
Western Sydney is growing quickly, and creating more opportunities for people to move, participate and connect is becoming increasingly important.
But participation isn't always just about access to a court or a program.
It's about creating an environment where people want to show up.
At Armoura, we've tried to make sport feel less intimidating and more social. You don't have to be the best player. You can come to play, watch, meet people or simply be part of something.
Measuring impact differently
Armoura Day also changed how I think about measuring community impact. Yes, we can measure:
400+ Sign-ups
350+ Attendees
100+ Athletes
10+ Brand Partners and connections
Tournament and clinic participation
Brand and community interactions
But we should also ask:
Who met someone new?
Who found a new opportunity?
Who felt like they belonged?
What relationships continued after the event?
Those are harder to measure, but they can be some of the most meaningful outcomes.
What's next
For Armoura, the next stage isn't just about growing our numbers.
It's about growing the genuine network and value around our community.
More athletes. More coaches. More local businesses. More community leaders. More opportunities to move and connect.
And this is where I'd love to open the conversation.
If you're an organisation, brand, community leader or industry partner looking to connect with young people, support grassroots sport and create meaningful impact across Western Sydney, I'd love to connect.
I believe the biggest opportunities come when we bring our networks, ideas and resources together.
Let's build something that gets people moving, brings people together and creates a lasting impact in Western Sydney.
