Bilal El-Hayek is the Mayor of the City of Canterbury-Bankstown, one of Australia's largest and most diverse local government areas. First elected to Council in 2017, he served two terms as Deputy Mayor before being elected Mayor in 2023 and re-elected in 2024.

Born in Tripoli, Lebanon, Bilal migrated to Australia with his family in 1999 at the age of 12. Arriving with little English, he attended intensive language classes before completing his schooling in Sydney's south-west. His journey from newly arrived migrant to Mayor reflects his strong belief that opportunity should be available to everyone, regardless of background.

Long before entering local government, Bilal built his career serving the community. He worked extensively with young people and families through the Police Citizens Youth Club (PCYC), developing programs that supported leadership, community participation and social inclusion. His passion for empowering young people and giving a voice to those facing disadvantage remains central to his public service.

As Mayor, Bilal is recognised for his hands-on and community-focused leadership style. He has championed initiatives that strengthen social cohesion, support vulnerable residents and celebrate the rich cultural diversity that makes Canterbury-Bankstown unique. He is a proud advocate for ending domestic and family violence, and was awarded the NSW Premier's Harmony Medal in 2018 for his contribution to multiculturalism and community harmony.
